Dr. Nelson, a board-certified specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy, is an Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In this role, he prepares Doctor of Physical Therapy students for contemporary practice by teaching evolving practice areas such as diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, nutrition, and primary care. His practice experience spans multiple sports and orthopedic clinical settings including a current position at UW-Madison University Health Service. He has provided specialty physical therapy care for runners throughout this career. His research developed patient-reported outcome measures for sport medicine and he is actively involved in research aiming to reduce the toll of running-related injuries in youth athletes. Trained in translational clinical research, he created the Velocity Project to improve the speed at which evidence-based guidance for high school athletes is translated into practice. Dr. Nelson is a runner and USATF Level 1 certified track coach. He is a volunteer middle school cross country and track & field coach because of a strong desire to make sure the most novice runners benefit from knowledgeable and experienced coaches.
