This focused one-hour workshop empowers coaches with the knowledge and tools to effectively manage one of the most common running-related injuries: shin pain. Participants will explore the multiple causes of shin pain, learn evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies, and gain practical insights into managing affected athletes within a team setting. The session emphasizes early identification, biomechanical interventions, and appropriate referral criteria to ensure athlete safety and performance continuity.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate prevention and treatment strategies for various causes of shin pain.
  • Integrate training and gait strategies to support runners with shin pain.
  • Articulate clear criteria for referring athletes to medical professionals.

Session Agenda:

Causes of Shin Pain – Overview of tissue-specific sources and clinical presentations (10 minutes)

Prevention Strategies – Evidence-based approaches to reduce risk (10 minutes)

The Coach’s Role in Managing Shin Pain – Practical strategies for supporting athletes during recovery (10 minutes)

Running Gait Interventions – Implement step rate (cadence) and ground contact time as a tool to keep runners running (15 minutes)

Training Load Management – Adjusting volume and intensity to prevent overload (5 minutes)

Question Forum – Open discussion and Q&A with instructors (10 minutes)
